Article Response – Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction

The New York Times has an ongoing series on Your Brain on Computers.  We are going to look at some of the content published.  For those of you that have completed your placement, I expect two blog entries,  for those of you still working away, you only need to do the first entry.

Part 1: Everyone reads this article

Read the article, Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction from the New York Times.

Write a response to this article on your blog.  Consider the following questions in your response.

  • Do you have anything in common with Vishal?  Do you have trouble disconnecting from the digital world?  Do you think your time online has a positive or negative effect on your grades?
  • Does technology amplify your personality?
  • In your own experience, do you think gaming affects your sleep patterns or your ability to to retain information?
  • Does Alan Eaton have a point when he says that  technology has led to a “balkanization of their focus and duration of stamina”?
  • Should schools be embracing more technology or do the costs of technology (not just financial costs) outweigh the benefits?
  • Are the students in this article a realistic depiction of your life?  Does the writer of the article have a good grasp of technology use among teenagers?

You do not need to answer every question.  Consider them prompts for your own response.

Part 2: If you have finished your placement, you must also complete this section as another blog post.

Choose one of the following sections of the NY Times series:

Teachers’ Views on Technology in the Classroom

Watch the videos created by teachers on how they use technology in the classroom.  Are any of these ideas worth pursuing at Mackenzie?  Which ones and what would need to happen for these ideas to work.  Respond to at least two videos.  Remember, we want ideas that enrich and enhance student learning not simply to use technology so we can say we are using technology.

Read the debate First Step to a Digital Detox.  Pick two of the reponses and comment on them on your blog.  Do you agree or disagree with the author?  Why or why not?  What is reasonable about what they say?  Does anything they say seem unreasonable?

Follow up question:  Would you consider a digital detox?  Why or why not?
