Placement Wrap-Up (Jenny and Alan)

Teacher: Mr. Willms
Subject: Design and Tech

Description: Mr. Willms asked Alan and I to create a website for his Design and Tech Grade 9 and 10 classes. So we created one website with two seperate pages for each grade. Under each grade page are 3 sub-pages for “Forms & Documents”, “Class Calender” and “Announcements”.

Placement Wrap Up – Sasha

Teacher: Mr.Freedman

Subject area: Buisness (BTT)

Description of project:

My group and I were placed in Mr. Freedman’s grade 9 Business Class. His original request was for us to help him create a website and just generally teach him how to incorporate technology into his classes. So throughout the first couple meetings, we created goals for our group to accomplish during our placement. They were to create Mr. Freedman a website, help enhance the BTT Isp and teaching Mr. Freedman how to effectively use the smart boards. So we first finished his official website called WLMFreedman. This went over fairly well and he grasped the concept of uploading files and partially editing the site. The second thing that we did was looking over the grade 9 Business ISP. We were surprised to see that technology was actually already incorporated into the ISP, so we decided to run with it and teach the Grade 9 Business class how to create their own websites using Weebly. Weebly was very simple to use, we started off by first explaining Weebly’s features through a prezi and then we showed them a sample site we created on Weebly. Apart from some student interruptions, the presentation went fairly well. Finally we created a workshop to teach Mr. Freedman how to use the Smart Boards. We essentially just taught the basics, going over things such as smart notebook and how to calibrate the board. We also created a Sample quiz/game for his grade 12 Accounting class. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the actual workshop but my group member told me that it went over well and that Mr. Freedman really enjoyed the quiz we prepared.

Possible uses in other classes/subject areas

Well initially the website we created was supposed to be for the grade 9 BTT course. But after a few consultations with Mr. Freedman, he allowed us to design a website that would tailor to all of the classes he woild be teaching over the course of the year.  We decided that we would add categories for all of his upcoming courses with designated sections for assignments & rubrics, important dates, Links, and lessons. This will allow him to use the web site with prospective classes that he will be instructing throughout the year. The information he could use towards his other subjects/classes was the information taught through the smart boards. He now knows how to teach on the smart boards and effectively use all of the general features. He also knows knows how to create smart notebook Quizzes, games, and customizable surveys for all of his other class/subjects. Finally I would like to believe that he now knows more about technology and web tools available such as weebly and prezi which he can incorporate into other classes and subject areas

Placement Wrap Up – Lindsay

Jina and I had two teachers, so here are the two wrap ups:

Teacher: Mrs.Ben David
Subject: English
Description: Initially, Mrs.Ben David asked us to create a website for her to use as a class resource. We created a Google Site and then we put it aside to allow Mrs.Ben David to think of the most efficient uses. Afterwards, we met again and were asked to teach Mrs.Ben David how to use Prezi and to help her develop an assignment for her grade 10 English class.
Technology: Google sites, Prezi
Possible uses in other classes/subject areas: The website is specific to Mrs.Ben David and we did not create a specific assignment to go with it, so it would not be able to be used for other classes.

Teacher: Ms. Blejman-Kantor
Subject: Spanish
Technology used: Prezi, Jing, VoiceThread, Google docs
Description: Ms. Blejman-Kantor asked us to help her incorporate technology into her grade 11 Spanish ISP. Through our discussion, we wanted to identify which tools would not only be beneficial to the Spanish students for their isp, but a basic presentation introducing them to what they can create with web tools. Using Prezi, Jina and I found tutorial videos for Prezi, Jing, VoiceThread and Google docs. Once we taught the students how to use these tools, I used my resources from the ISP I completed last year for the grade 11 Spanish course to create a sample presentation for the new assignment. The web tool presentation is very basic and can be altered to be used in any class.
We sat down with Ms.Blejman-Kantor and altered the assignment and marking scheme, making it a very simple task: “You must use AT LEAST ONE Web Tool in your presentation, and you must use Jing or Voicethread to prerecord yourself reading one of the two poems you decide to focus on.
Possible uses in other classes/subject areas: The general how-to Prezi can be used in any class that needs the instruction, all that needs to happen is changing the title on the presentation.

Placement Self Evaluation

Using the Placement Evaluation, grade yourself based on your work for your placement teacher.   Include justifications for each mark you are giving yourself.

Two ways to complete this task – using the google doc – copy it, complete it and share it with me  or create a post on your blog.

Placement Portfolio and Evaluation

Some clarifications, just in case anyone is still confused:

  • Your portfolio blog post should be put on this blog.
    • Log into your wordpress account.  You should see a grey bar at the top of the browser.  Click My Blogs.  You should see IDC – ICT.  Click New Post.  Begin your post.
  • Your post should contain written material and the actual portfolio piece.
  • Please use the Portfolio category for your post and tag it with the techology used in your placement (website, prezi, jing, google earth, smartboard, blog, moviemaker, etc.)
Portfolio piece:
  • A presentation of what you created for your placement using a relevant piece of technology.  (Suggestions: a jing video that tours a website, a prezi your resources/videos, a google doc summary, voice thread description of your materials, etc (feel free to come up with something better!))
    • A note on Jing videos – you can leave them up on the Jing video hosting service and then embed the link in your post.
  • Links to and/or uploads of any material that your created for your placement.

Placement Wrap-Up (Jenny)

Subject: English
Technology Used: Google Sites

Description: Ms. Hanna asked our group (Noah, Alan and I) to create help her with 3 things: class website, reading response blog and Prezi presentation. I was in charge of creating Ms. Hanna’s class website. Ms. Hanna specifically asked to have the following elements on her class website: a page for links, a page for homework assignments and a page for announcements. However, I also added in a Google Calender where she could mark due dates and upcoming important dates for her students to view. In addition, I showed her how to adjust her privacy settings, how to post entries, and how to update the Google Calender. After helping her with all this, she asked me to create a succinct tutorial page that shows how to start a Google Site.

The website I created for Ms. Hanna could be used as a template to create class websites for other teachers. Alan and I used her website for our second placement with Mr. Willms as a template for his own class website for the Design and Tech classes. The document I made that shows how to create a Google Site could also be given out to teachers who want to try and make a class website on their own.

Work for Monday, November 22nd

If you are finished all the work for your placement, this will be your last work period for your portfolio summary.  We will be moving on to new projects tomorrow.  Today, you need to create your summary of what you did.  Remember, you can use any technology you wish to demonstrate your projects.  The complete details are available in an earlier post.

As I have yet to add everyone to this blog, please post your material on your own blog for now.

For students who are done all their placement work the due date for their final post is Friday.  You will not be given any more class time.

If you are still actively working on something for your placement teachers, continue to work.  You have the rest of the week to finish your placement projects (unless there is a reason you will need more time in December).  You will have a later deadline for your portfolio post.

Just a reminder to update your daily logs as well.  Some of you are working on more of a weekly schedule.
