Placement Wrap Up (Ariel, Shayan and Ilnar)

Description:

Mr. Carpenter asked our group to find a way to incorporate the grade 9 geography ISP into Google Earth. We researched Google Earth, as well as Wolfram Alpha and Gapminder for research. We created a tutorial video to teach the class how to use each tool. Ariel researched Google Earth, Shayan researched Wolfram Alpha, and Ilnar researched Gapminder. We each created a video, and put them together using Camtasia Studio 7.

 

As we recorded Jing videos for each webtool, we had trouble with converting the jing videos into AVI format. We needed to convert each video into AVI or any other common video format in order to combine the videos, and further upload them to youtube. To research and find a tool that would convert our video for free was the hardest and most time consuming aspect of this assignment. Although it was completely unrelated to the placement project, it introduced us to technology such as Camtasia Studio that basically converts and records video into a common format.

Abdul Abdi Placement Wrap Up

Teacher: Ms Pettie

Subject: English ESL D

Technology Used: Jing, Prezi and Google Docs

Description:

When we first meet Ms.Pettie she asked us to help incorporate technology into her classes especially her ESL D English class. She also told us that her ESL D class was reading Romeo and Juliet and they would have two assignments, a comic strip and acting out a scene from romeo and Juliet. Tal and I told her that for the comic strip assignment they could use a program called Bitstrips and they could record their scene from the play and edit it using Windows Movie Maker. So , Tal and I decided that I would prepare a presentation on Bitstrips and he would make one for Bitstrips. We both made our presentations on Prezi and incorporated Jing videos into them. We then went to MS.Pettie’s ESL D class and presented our Prezi to them and we also gave them some time to get familiar with each program while we walked around and helped and answered any questions.

Possible uses in other classes/subject areas:

Bitstrips and WIndows Movie Maker could be and I assume are already used in most Media arts and Grapic Design classes. Also, most English classes do the same comic strip and acting out a scene assignment, so bitstips and Windows Movie Maker could also be used in there as well. Also students in almost all classes ( English, Social Science, Science, Languages and Business) could use Windows Live Movie Maker  to create videos that could help make a  more entertaining and captivating presentation. In conclusion, there is the ability to use these two softwares in most subject areas.

Tal’s portfolio wrap up for Ms Pettie

Our goal for our placement was to introduce Ms Pettie and her ESL D English class to technology they could use for assignments related to Romeo and Juliet. She told us that the two assignments we should focus on are a comic assignment and a Romeo and Juliet skit that’s done every year for every play. Because Abdul and I used Windows Movie Maker in our English class last year for the same purpose, we decided to introduce it to her class. We also decided to introduce her and her class to Bitstrips, a comic design website. I chose to explore Bitstrips while Abdul chose Windows Live Movie Maker. We made Prezis for both technologies and prepared a presentation for her class. We also scheduled the net book cart for use for the period during which we were presenting. On Wednesday December 8th, we presented our information to her class, guided the students through using the technology and made sure everything was running smoothly. The students seem to have learned a lot and enjoyed using both programs.

The technologies we presented can be used for any class; however our presentations were geared specifically towards her class and students. Because her class was ESL, we focused most of our presentation in our speech and actually showing them the technologies, instead of packing our information into a Prezi or Jing video that would’ve been hard for the students to follow along with.  Because of this, our presentation can’t really be recycled unless we were to go to every class and present it again.

Description: Mr. Willms asked Alan and I to create a website for his Design and Tech Grade 9 and 10 classes. So we created one website with two seperate pages for each grade. Under each grade page are 3 sub-pages for “Forms & Documents”, “Class Calender” and “Announcements”.

Placement Wrapup (Chris A.)

Me and my group were chosen to work with Mr. Freedman’s Business class. Mr Freedman asked us to create a website for him and help to find ways for using more technology in his class. At first we did interviews with Mr Freedman in order to expend his ideas. Throughout interviews we find out that we have to teach his class how to use smart board and improve their ISPs with help of technology. There was already some technology used there so we decided to show to the students of his class how to create their own site on weebly. We also went over how to use smart notebook for Mr Freedman and created a quiz for his class.

The site that we had to create for Business 9 class was created as a site for Mr. Freedman’s all classes and he now knows how to use the smart board and create quizes for his all classes. I hope we helped Mr. Freedman to expend use of technology in his courses.

Description: For our teacher placement with Ms. Mancini, her media studies class was working on video projects at the time. She requested that we teach her class on how to use Windows Live Movie Maker as they would be using the netbooks during their class. She was also open to us sharing tips and technique suggestions with her class on shooting video and editing. Showing examples of videos edited by students might help the class understand the concepts we are trying explain. During our interview we discussed what kind of problems the students might face with their footage and with the program. Most students were probably not familiar or have never used the new version of Movie Maker. We were to give solutions to these problems in our lesson. In class we familiarized ourselves with Movie Maker and prepared a lesson plan.

Ms. Mancini also asked us to make a blog/website for her class as Nico has already describe in his post.

Possible uses in other classes/subject areas: The use of Movie Maker or any video editing software can be applied to most subjects including, English, Social Sciences, Art, and even Science courses. There have been many projects in these courses where making a video was required from the particular assignment or it was an option to present your information. Videos provide a creative and entertaining way of presenting a project.

Placement Wrap Up – Sasha

Description of project:

My group and I were placed in Mr. Freedman’s grade 9 Business Class. His original request was for us to help him create a website and just generally teach him how to incorporate technology into his classes. So throughout the first couple meetings, we created goals for our group to accomplish during our placement. They were to create Mr. Freedman a website, help enhance the BTT Isp and teaching Mr. Freedman how to effectively use the smart boards. So we first finished his official website called WLMFreedman. This went over fairly well and he grasped the concept of uploading files and partially editing the site. The second thing that we did was looking over the grade 9 Business ISP. We were surprised to see that technology was actually already incorporated into the ISP, so we decided to run with it and teach the Grade 9 Business class how to create their own websites using Weebly. Weebly was very simple to use, we started off by first explaining Weebly’s features through a prezi and then we showed them a sample site we created on Weebly. Apart from some student interruptions, the presentation went fairly well. Finally we created a workshop to teach Mr. Freedman how to use the Smart Boards. We essentially just taught the basics, going over things such as smart notebook and how to calibrate the board. We also created a Sample quiz/game for his grade 12 Accounting class. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the actual workshop but my group member told me that it went over well and that Mr. Freedman really enjoyed the quiz we prepared.

Well initially the website we created was supposed to be for the grade 9 BTT course. But after a few consultations with Mr. Freedman, he allowed us to design a website that would tailor to all of the classes he woild be teaching over the course of the year.  We decided that we would add categories for all of his upcoming courses with designated sections for assignments & rubrics, important dates, Links, and lessons. This will allow him to use the web site with prospective classes that he will be instructing throughout the year. The information he could use towards his other subjects/classes was the information taught through the smart boards. He now knows how to teach on the smart boards and effectively use all of the general features. He also knows knows how to create smart notebook Quizzes, games, and customizable surveys for all of his other class/subjects. Finally I would like to believe that he now knows more about technology and web tools available such as weebly and prezi which he can incorporate into other classes and subject areas
